Suryakumar has been named India’s T20I captain after Rohit Sharma quit the shortest format following last month’s World Cup triumph.
The 33-year-old Suryakumar has been selected to captain a 15-member Indian T20 team for a series of three matches in Sri Lanka. The first game is scheduled to take place on July 27 in Pallekele.
According to reports, Suryakumar, known for his aggressive batting style in the middle order and his reliability in the T20 format, was the primary pick for the new head coach, Gautam Gambhir.
Suryakumar, who previously captained Mumbai in domestic cricket, last year led India to a 4-1 T20 series win over Australia and followed it up with a 1-1 result in South Africa.
