Japan: ‘Jealous’ husband arrested after making over 100 nuisance calls every day for a month

A man in Japan, out of jealousy, made 100 silent calls every day for a month to his wife, harassing her between July and August.
This strange incident got attention as the 31-year-old woman from Hyogo prefecture reported the case to the police after suspicion grew over her husband when she noticed a strange behaviour, South China Morning Post reported.
The woman noticed that someone used to call her but didn’t answer. She complained about the same to her husband who also didn’t do much for her help.
Later she noticed that she never received calls when her husband was sleeping, playing video games, or spending time with her.
Suspecting his involvement, she suggested a shopping trip and observed that he refrained from using his phone throughout the day, resulting in no calls.
Police investigations revealed that the husband was indeed behind the nuisance calls, despite the couple’s seemingly harmonious relationship. He had concealed his phone number to harass his wife anonymously.
Reports suggest that jealousy, particularly after discovering her conversation with another man, drove him to make the silent calls as a form of punishment.
In Japan, causing significant psychological distress through nuisance calls is illegal, with violators facing up to one year in prison or a fine of up to 1 million yen (US$7,000), along with a prohibition order. The husband was arrested on September 4, but his punishment remains undisclosed.
The incident has sparked a nationwide discussion, with online observers condemning the husband’s controlling behavior and emphasizing the importance of communication in resolving relationship issues. Similar cases of husbands harassing or stalking their wives have been reported in China, such as a man from Hubei province who used a drone to uncover his wife’s affair with her boss, intending to use the evidence in divorce proceedings.
