Indian Universities See Mixed Results in Times Higher Education Rankings 2025.

Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bangalore continues to hold the title of India’s top-ranked university in the newly released Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings 2025. However, it failed to make it into the global top 250, a notable dip in its standing. IISc Bangalore has slipped to the 251-300 band this year. Despite the slip, the institute achieved an overall score ranging from 53.7 to 55.7.
The Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings 2025 assess research-intensive universities based on five core areas: Teaching, research environment, research quality, international outlook, and industry income.The evaluation is conducted using 18 performance indicators, which include factors such as teaching reputation, student-to-staff ratio, research productivity, citation impact, and the extent of international collaboration.
Several Indian universities have shown notable improvements in this year’s rankings. Anna University, Mahatma Gandhi University, Saveetha Institute of Medical and Technical Sciences, and Shoolini University of Biotechnology and Management Sciences all broke into the 401-500 band. Each of these institutions scored between 46.0 and 49.2, marking significant progress in their global positioning.
However, not all Indian universities experienced positive trends. Jamia Millia Islamia saw a drop, falling into the 501-600 band, down from last year’s rank. The institution now shares this rank band with IIT Indore and UPES Dehradun, both of which are among this year’s biggest gainers.
In the 601-800 band, Aligarh Muslim University and Amity University retained their positions, with overall scores between 38.2 and 43.2.
This year’s rankings highlight the competitive global education landscape, with Indian universities working to improve their standing. Despite IISc’s slip, other institutions are emerging as strong contenders on the world stage, reflecting a promising upward trend for India’s higher education sector.

2025 vs. 2024: How Did Indian Universities Fare in THE Rankings Over the These Two Years?
In a year-to-year comparison, Indian universities have experienced a mix of progress in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2025. While some institutions have improved their global standing, others have seen a noticeable drop in rankings.
In 2024, IISc ranked within the 201-250 band, boasting an overall score between 55.9 and 58.6. However, in 2025, IISc slipped into the 251-300 band, with a lower score range of 53.7 to 55.7. Despite the decline, IISc remains India’s highest-ranked university.
On the other hand, universities like Anna University, Mahatma Gandhi University, Saveetha Institute of Medical and Technical Sciences, and Shoolini University of Biotechnology and Management Sciences have shown significant improvement. All four institutions moved from the 501-600 band in 2024 to the 401-500 band in 2025. Their overall scores improved from a range of 41.9-45.3 to 46.0-49.2.
However, Jamia Millia Islamia experienced a decline, maintaining its 501-600 rank but with a marginal drop in its overall score, moving from 41.9-45.3 in 2024 to 43.3-45.9 in 2025.
Aligarh Muslim University maintained its position in the 601-800 band, but its score saw an improvement, rising from 37.0-41.8 in 2024 to 38.2-43.2 in 2025. Amity University, which was not among the top 10 Indian universities in 2024, made it into the 601-800 band in 2025.
Institutions like Banaras Hindu University, Bharathiar University, and IIT Guwahati, which ranked in the 601-800 band in 2024, were absent from the top 10 in 2025, reflecting changes in Indian universities’ global standing.
